Prairie Snow & Play Date

Springtime in Alberta can throw you for a loop…yesterday I was outside in short sleeves and 20C weather cleaning up the front yard and getting flower and vegetable beds ready for planting. This morning I woke to this:

Snow-covered in May

And it’s still coming down – big, fluffy, marshmallow puffs of snow that make the landscape look more like a wintery white December day.  So beautiful…

…except it’s MAY, and the trees are leafing out, and my hydrangea bushes are full of buds, and everything is was green and bursting with the aliveness of spring!

“As my eyes search the prairie, I feel the summer in the spring.”  Chippewa Song

Yes, I’d like to feel that too, but my eyes are seeing something else.  Ah well, one can only laugh and delight in this unexpected gift of nature. It’s a good day to play in my studio, since we haven’t seen much of each other lately.  Travel, preparations for the wholistic fair held last weekend, and other commitments left little time for art-making.

Journals

My Intention Journal (left) received some collage papers on front and back, and I’ll continue to work on it through the year.  My fabric-covered journal (back) will be used for Spectrum, an online 6-month holistic creative circle offered by the super-talented Hali Karla. Many of my favourite online teachers and artists are part of this offering, and I expect to learn so much from them.  I’m excited to begin!  To the right is a single journal page that will eventually form part of my ‘Seasons’ journal; stitching (a snowflake pattern perhaps?) and a few other elements have yet to be added.  How appropriate to do a winter scene on this blustery May day – HA!

Community Mandala

Speaking of the Wholistic Fair – thanks to all who stopped by my booth to say hello and to those who contributed to the community mandala. Although I’d prepared the mandala with some circles penciled in, everyone was encouraged to go outside the lines and add whatever they wanted.  What a lovely mix – love the way it turned out! There was also lots of interest and inquiry about my expressive arts offerings, classes and playshops. I’m looking forward to some fun gatherings!

Sure Dara – thanks! My ‘seasons’ journal will include images and nature objects (sticks, stones, feathers, etc) that I’ll either stitch, wire or glue onto the page. I’m not sure yet how I’ll bind it – depends how thick it becomes!
