More and more, I’m enjoying this 365 mini-project! I think the habit is firmly established now, and it’s become a place for me to focus on that one specific word, image, or feeling that highlights my day. Very different from my journal practice, where pages are filled with writing, often a combination of gratitude, whining, should-haves, could-haves, want-tos and anything else that pops into my head in the wee hours of the morning.
So much of the day is filled with busy-ness and routine, and it’s easy to overlook the tiny miracles and gifts that are scattered throughout. This practice encourages me to keep my eyes open and my ears awake – seeing and listening and tucking those moments away to be retrieved later in the day and creatively condensed into this little card. You know, the good stuff – things that bring a smile to my face and to my heart…things I want to remember.
January was a mixed bag of delightful surprises, sadness and letting go….
Yes, that ‘other’ stuff – sadness, grief, disappointment – the not-so-pretty life-events that are woven into the fabric of our lives just to remind us that it isn’t all about “the good stuff.” Those too are represented in my art, not because I want to specifically remember them, but because they need to be acknowledged, given voice and processed, not buried or ignored. I know there is gift there somewhere and has something to teach me, even when I’m too close now to see it. Healing, perspective…the diamond in the chunk of coal…are more easily spotted from the distance of time.
A winter get-away to sunnier climates – yeah! Cards were prepped in advance and I brought along a small kit containing scissors, glue stick, my favourite pen, and word snippets. Images were gleaned from brochures picked up and are a little memento of things we saw or did that day.
Home again and back to daily routines. Don’t you find it’s way too tempting and easy to let good habits slide when you travel? Me too, but this was one I’m happy to say that I kept up…besides, great Mexican food counts as healthy eating, doesn’t it? 😉
